The 1770 Society was established in 2003 to recognize individuals who invest $1,000 or more in unrestricted giving. This level of support
enables the College to direct its resources toward the institution's most pressing needs, particularly in the areas of student scholarships,
program expansion, and faculty development. And with state appropriations reduced to just 21% from the mid-30's a few years ago, the College
must increasingly rely on private funding to meet those needs.
Names after four of the many prominent founding members of the College of Charleston, the 1770 Society recognizes the following Levels
of Support:
- • William Bull Society $1,000
- • Thomas Heyward Society $2,500
- • Arthur Middleton Society $5,000
- • Edward Rutledge Society $10,000
- • Randolph
Harrison (1 to 10 years post-graduation) $250
- • Lifetime Membership $100,000

In addition to the satisfaction of investing in higher education, members of the 1770 Society receive benefits such as:
- • Annual donor reception
with President Benson
- • Special recognition in annual donor report
- • 1770 Society members' newsletter
- • Invitations to select special events
- • 1770 Society window decal
- • Subscription to College of Charleston Magazine
