The College of Charleston Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization
incorporated in 1970 under the laws of the State of South Carolina as an educational, charitable, eleemosynary foundation
to promote educational, research, and other programs of the College of Charleston.
The College of Charleston Foundation has a 29 member Board of Directors
with duly elected officers, which meets quarterly with full authority
and responsibility for all Foundation assets including all private
gifts intended for the support of the College of Charleston. Governed
by a set of by-laws, all fiduciary activities and other business transactions
are open to public scrutiny as provided by law.
The College of Charleston Foundation has the following objectives:
- • To provide academic, athletic, and other scholarships to those students who, by past performance, have demonstrated their
ability and desire to excel.
- • To support the educational programs of the College and to promote
and aid in providing continuing educational programs for faculty,
alumni, and other interested parties and to aid in the development
of new and innovative programs which will benefit the College
of Charleston.
- • To promote, encourage, and aid investigation and research by the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Charleston.
- • To promote the recruitment and retention of a superior faculty encouraging and aiding their professional development through support
of such academic pursuits as the establishment of academic chairs and distinguished professorships; the support of visiting professors and
special seminar programs; and support of other programs which will assure the proper intellectual environment for faculty growth at
the College of Charleston.
- • To support the establishment and implementation of a long-range program of fundraising for the College of Charleston in order to promote
the development of new academic programs at the College and to provide a mechanism for the improvement and expansion of existing programs
at the College of Charleston.
- • To build an endowment fund, the income from which would be expended annually by the Board for the exclusive benefit of the College of
Charleston.
- • To promote, support, and aid any and all other activities and programs which will further the purpose of the College of Charleston.
The Office of Development is a department within the division of Institutional Advancement, a division of the College of Charleston, which is
an agency of the State of South Carolina. The objectives of the Office of Development are to provide counsel and assistance to the College
community, friends, and supports about ways to procure and establish private gift support to help the College supplement state appropriations
and other government grants and contracts. Private gift support is encouraged from faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, friends,
corporations, and private foundations. In cooperation with the College of Charleston Foundation, fund raising programs, supported and
capital gifts for endowment, such as planned gifts through wills, trusts, and other forms of estate or referred giving, are staffed by the
College's Office of Development staff.
By agreement with the Foundation, Institutional Advancement staff provides some staff support to the Foundation enabling the Foundation to
carry out its routine day-to-day business operations, primarily gift receipting and processing. These consultative, administrative, and
collaborative activities, which are in part financially supported by the Foundation, are provided in strict observance of the law, which
disallows any control, or co-mingling of funds. The result has been to bring cohesion and uniformity to the policies and procedures for
securing private gifts exclusively for use by and on behalf of the College of Charleston.
